Eco-builder is a free Key Stage 3 learning resource designed to engage students with ecological building issues such as sustainability and renewable energy.

It provides a wealth of information to help students learn about green issues and the importance of considering the environment when planning and building new communities.

Developed in conjunction with the Young Gifted and Talented Programme (YG&T).

Become an Eco-Architect!

Eco-builder is a rich and engaging simulation-style learning activity, which gives learners the opportunity to become Eco-Architects, overseeing the design and construction of a fully sustainable eco-community.  Specially designed for gifted and talented learners aged 10-14, the real world context motivates learners and encourages them to make a positive contribution e.g. by reflecting on the environmental impact of their lives and promoting more sustainable lifestyles.

Eco-builder focuses on real world issues that cover a range of cross-curricular themes including interaction between people and their environment and the importance of sustainability in scientific and technological developments. It can be used in a variety of ways to promote learning both inside and outside the classroom, e.g. independent self-study, directed self-study and classroom study.

Eco-builder:

• Takes inspiration from real-life eco-communities
• Addresses a range of themes, such as the interaction between people and the environment and the importance of sustainability in scientific and technological developments
• Is underpinned by an established learning model, enabling learners to explore different routes according to their personal learning preferences
• Allows users to manage all aspects of their eco-community
• Introduces users to such topics as eco-construction, organic farming techniques, water conservation, waste management and renewable energy

NACE (National Association for Able Children in Education) were advisers throughout the development and trialling of Eco-builder.
